Bossie to release right-wing bash Obama film "Hype"

Right-wing swift-boater David Bossie and his organization Citizen's United  have geared up for the release of a "documentary" attack film on Barack Obama.

Jonathan Martin reports Bossie

is spending about $250,00 on Fox News ad time through week's end to promote his latest effort: "HYPE: The Obama Effect."

Reidblog reports:

"Hype" is the latest video hit job by a very disturbed guy named David Bossie, who heads the aforementioned Citizens United, and whose past credentials include creating those fake Bill Clinton-Gennifer Flowers audiotapes and getting fired as chief investigator for fellow nut-job Dan Burton's House Government Reform & Oversight Committee back in the 1990s. More about Dave:

Bossie started his political career (almost) innocently enough in 1988 when he served as the National Youth Director of Senator Bob Dole's unsuccessful presidential campaign.

In 1992, Bossie was working for the right-wing organization Citizens United (the group that "invented" Willie Horton). As executive director of Citizens United chairman Floyd Brown's "Presidential Victory Committee," he used taped conversations allegedly between then-Governor Bill Clinton and Gennifer Flowers as part of an advertising and "800" number scheme to smear Clinton. The tapes have since been discredited because they were edited and doctored. A direct mailing from Citizens United using this material was made to look as if it were an "official" mailing from Bush campaign -- and the Bush people alerted the FEC to the mailings in an effort to stop them!

Bossie spent a great deal of time in 1992 in Arkansas, digging dirt on Clinton. David Corn reports in the May 6, 1998 issue of Salon that "at one point, Bossie got into a fistfight in Arkansas with a private detective who claimed Bossie had welshed on a $10,000 payment for anti-Clinton material."

That same year, Bossie harassed the family of a suicide victim. "An anonymous and untraceable letter" was faxed to some 30 news organizations "claiming Clinton had had an affair with a former law student who committed suicide 15 years ago," an "emotionally distraught young woman, seven-months pregnant" named Susan Coleman. Only after the fact of the fax campaign did Bossie attempt to contact the family for "confirmation," and did so in a repetitive and unrelenting manner suggestive more of harrassment than fact-checking. Bossie, with help from former Washington DC police officer James Murphy, went so far as to follow Susan's mother to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where her husband was seriously ill and recovering from a stroke. They "burst into the sick man's room and began questioning the shaken mother about her daughter's suicide." (Source: CBS News, July 13, 1992, quoted at The Allodium web site)

Media Matters has also covered Bossie's scandal packed smear career for some time:

Bossie was fired in 1998 from his job as chief investigator for the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight -- which was investigating alleged Clinton White House campaign finance abuses -- for his role in releasing selectively edited transcripts of former Clinton administration official Webster Hubbell's prison conversations. (Hubbell went to prison for defrauding his Little Rock, AR, law firm.) According to a May 7, 1998, article in The Washington Times, "Mr. Burton said David Bossie had 'chosen to resign,' although House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Mr. Burton 'fired the one person he should have fired.'" The Washington Times quoted Burton conceding: "A mistake was made in not including in the 30 pages of transcripts a couple of comments made by Mr. Hubbell about himself and the first lady. They were relevant, and they should not have been left out." The Washington Times concluded its piece by noting, "Mr. Bossie is no stranger to controversy. ... Republicans said yesterday that they also blamed Mr. Bossie for the notorious melon-shooting, staged re-enactment of the death of White House Deputy Counsel Vincent W. Foster Jr."

Wait till you see the star-studded cast Bossie has lined up for his puke-umentary, including some of my all time favorite Oreo's.

(Just love that comment " Big Government doesn't help people, and it certainly doesn't help the people in MY congregation" from the Rev Joe Watkins who has a congregation of about 85 members in Philly) and  suffers visibly from a condition known as "Trinity Envy".

The Trailer:

Though Bossie produced and was geared up to push his attack film on Hillary Clinton, Hillary: The Movie, when she didn't get the nod, Bossie had to switch gears.

Floyd Brown and David Bossie: Back in the Swift Boat captain's chairs

These days, however, Brown's new organization, The National Campaign Fund -- which launched a new website "ExposeObama.com" -- and Bossie's Citizens United have added Sen. Barack Obama to the mix.

Brown recently told Time magazine that "he had established several other front groups to fund a long-range effort to erode Obama's support, including a second PAC, called The Legacy Committee, a 527 organization called Citizens for a Safe and Prosperous America and a so-called "social welfare" 501(c)4 nonprofit called the Policy Issues Institute."

Bossie told Newsweek that he was "assembling material for TV spots about Obama's ties with [Bill] Ayers, a Chicago professor and unrepentant former member of the Weather Underground, a group that bombed several government buildings to protest the Vietnam War."

Well folks - here's the big swift-boat we've been waiting for.  Since FAUX Spews will be the main promotional source, doubtful that this so-called documentary is going to convince anyone of anything.  Those Obama haters in the low information voting column will only have their delusions confirmed.

What saddens me I suppose is the overload of black faces to do the dirty work.  But there have always been Tom's and Tio Tacos and some folks will do anything for their 15 minutes of infamy so I guess this speaks to equal opportunity bigotry and wrong-headedness.

I thought Armstrong Williams (none / 0)

likes Obama?  He indicated in an interview that he didn't know for whom he would be voting.  Williams also praised Obama for what he learned from the Million Man March.

Watkins is a pub but he has also indicated how proud he is of Obama.  It's weird to see those two guys on this list.

I don't see how this affects anyone who would have voted for Obama, anyway.  I mean, you have to operate in some pretty depraved circles to get wind of these things.

A lot of non-depraved folks watch FOX.

Yeah, but how many of them are going to buy a documentary?  Alternatively, how many Fox viewers would vote for Obama?

Don't get me wrong, certain ghostly members of the MyDD community, who have since migrated primarily to other sites, are probably reserving their copies as we speak...

Re: Bossie to release right-wing bash Obama film (none / 0)

Actually I know FOX viewers who are voting for Obama. They don't tune in to just to watch FOX news - but watch shows like the Simpsons and that talent show - duh - having a senior moment - can't remember the name - but probably catch the news too.

I know quite a few Latinos who like Geraldo.

Joe Watkins is a regular talking head on other news channels - not FOX.

Big difference between "Fox viewer" and "Fox News Viewer".

Not so sure about that.  Some folks have the TV on 24/7 - when the program they are watching segues into News - do they always switch?

FOX cable news and FOX broadcast news are different in local areas I think.

Am not an expert on FOX period since I don't watch it.  But have walked into my car dealership to wait for my car and the TV there seems to be perpetually tuned to FOX. Also in airports.

Re: Bossie to release right-wing bash Obama film (none / 0)

OK...I'm talking about the Fox News Channel.  Regular local Fox "News at 10", or whatever it is, is likely not much different than any other local broadcast.

Of course, we're also talking in generalities.  Some people watch Fox News (channel) for the conservative echo chamber.  Some probably watch it because they prefer the personalities on it.  Its viewers cover a large spectrum, but undoubtedly are more conservative on average than those who watch other channels.

But Fox is strange.  Their regular programming isn't conservative.  Far from it, if you ask me.  But their news channel is very conservative.  So people who just watch Fox and happen to catch the local news...I'm not surprised that they'd have a fair mix of McCain and Obama supporters.  For Fox News (the channel, again), I'd imagine that their viewers are more conservative than the average American, though with a fair share of liberals who like to feel outraged about what's being said of them.

Re: Bossie to release right-wing bash Obama film (none / 0)

But how many of them know to disregard stuff like this as expected? We've all been through the political playbook by now, and everyone had the chance to evaluate whether Obama was a radical. That's something that keeps causing him problems, but it's not something that will keep getting bigger the more you mention it.

Most people who watch FOX were predisposed to think Obama was the devil. That has been the portrayal the whole time. So for them to be coming around on him means they've decided to ignore this kind of tripe. Honestly, if this is the best they got, bring em on.

right-wing bash Obama film " (2.00 / 1)

Notice that the cast consists of right wing has-beens, most of whom have been drummed out of their media jobs.

But lets check out some of these bozos individually:

Michael Barone: Cancelled at CNN, CNBC, and McLaughlin Group.
Dr. Richard Benkin
Sec. William Bennett: Gamblaholic peddler of virtue.
Ken Blackwell: Rigged voting in 2004 election
Amb. John Bolton: Couldn't even get confirmed as UN Amb.
Tucker Carlson: Cancelled at CNN, MSNBC, and McLaughlin Group
Frank Gaffney, Jr.
Jim Geraghty
Karen Hayes
Gov. Mike Huckabee: Made a joke about Obama getting assassinated.
Congressman Duncan L. Hunter
Duncan D. Hunter
Ron Kessler
Dick Morris: Counseled president Clinton while with a prostitute.
Robert Novak
Former Illinois State Senator Patrick O'Malley
Former Illinois State Senator Steve Rauschenberger
Senator Rick Santorum: Terry Shiavo anyone?
Jill Stanek
Shelby Steele
Joe Watkins
Armstrong Williams: Took bribes from WH to write favorable stories.
Byron York

I'm sure the other all stars in this cast are losers too.

Can't wait to how many McPumas sing it's praises on this blog.

Re: right-wing bash Obama film " (none / 0)

Thanks for the id's.

Shelby Steele is the self-appointed head of the black conservative intelligentsia.

Joe Watkins is on MSNBC.

According to wiki Byron York  "is a White House correspondent for National Review magazine and a columnist for The Hill. "

Can't seem to find much about him - seems to be some type of extreme pro-Israel type - but can't find a wiki entry.  Perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.

Re: Bossie to release right-wing (none / 0)

When you look at the line up of "pundits" it is almost laughable. This will reinforce the prejudices of the far right but with have little other impact. It might even marginally help him with moderates because it's so self evidently loony.

Bossie's living (none / 0)

Bossie does this for a living. His Citizen's United has to be doing SOMETHING to justify his requests for contributions.  It was his hit-film on Clinton, but that went by the wayside with her loss in the primary. Therefore he had to throw this together.  Ultimately, it means nothing.  It exists only as a justification for him to pay himself a salary.

Re: Bossie's living (none / 0)

This is true of so many of these right wing shills and nut cases. It's how they make their living. They've identified there's a market for this stuff and they produce, it's like there's a market for sado masochistic sex. My guess is there are around ten or fifteen million real conservatives most of whom wouldn't lay out any money for this bs but about four million would. They are the avid fans of O'Reilly, buy Coulters books, lap up Krauthammer's eds, rant on Redstate etc etc. To Bossie these people are just sheep to be sheared. As occasionally happens the real opinion of Hannity types about these rubes slips out but most of the time like cows they obedient and moo on cue. It's really that simple. Bossie is a total scumbag like Rove a bit higher up the food chain but there's money to made catering to the prejudices of these people. Someone's got to do it.

fist fights for welshing on the 10k owed to a private detective?

tied to the "willie horton" ads" ?

trying to pass off doctored tapes to smear Bill Clinton?

this Bossie character seems like a real stand up guy

Excellent!  We have seen in the past special elections, that smearing Obama only helps us!  So, keep it up, Republicans!  Let the world know how ugly you really are!  It only helps us!

Poor Republicans... smearing is all they know... when that doesn't work, they have little to nothing else!  No wonder they are so panicked!
